I've read that it coats the teeth and allows bacteria to cling to teeth and gums and doesn't allow the teeth to re-enamelize. Good site is http://gerardjudd.com/summation.htm where Dr Gerard Judd talks about how to have good teeth. I use baking soda and evaporated Sea Salt half & half as a tooth powder, and sometimes add zylitol. This makes my teeth feel clean and fresh and haven't had any tooth problems in years.
