You have a vague concept of Non-Dualism.
"""Man is first and foremost a human being..""""
What is a human being? Man is either a smart ape or a divine incarnation depending on the state of his consciousness from the point of view of Non-dualism or Advaita Vedanta.
"""But most consider themselves something else to be first and foremost.""" Even if you consider yourself to be a part of the Divine that does not make it so.
There are perhaps a handful of people in the entire world who live in the state of enlightenment. If everybody was in that state there would be no conflict ,no wars, no classes. But since it is impossible except for a rare few to achieve that state it really doesnt belong in a discussion of politics.
Ninety nine percent of the population dont even have the slightest interest in spiritual self transcendence, they are either atheists or religious believers waiting for paradise. One percent does but almost all of these follow various paths that are Ego based and thus are often in conflict with all the other spiritual disciplines.
""""When the first step is missed, all the other steps are missed as well. """
It is the last step of perfect enlightenment that matters. Until that moment you are still an EgoSelf and totally capable of all kinds of self serving actions including killing. And history shows us that enlightened beings often exploit their disciples for money and sex.
Religion (not spiritual practice) is just an excuse people use for gaining power over others and is little more than a mass delusion which very often turns into violence.
All religions should be viewed as potentially radical extremist political philosophies whose goals are antithetical to Freedom and Justice.
The threat of radical religious groups to ones freedoms should never be underestimated.
