Re: clutter, filth, and depression

I hope you have found some answers somewhere as I have just experienced the same thing with my step daughter. After years of avoidance - saying her house was "messy" - she finally let us enter the house to install a water ionizing unit. OMG --- 4 cats, a litter box full of feces and urine, pee all over the house, poop everywhere, fleas, clutter, FILTHY kitchen (unusable) and unspeakable bathrooms.

Her husband is disabled (morbidly obese diabetic unable to walk), she has two kids, one recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, and they all lived in this filth. And her mom knew about it and didn't intervene. Husband never said a word. We were shocked and acted immediately to triage the house and will continue to take action until it is back to normal. But my concern is to get help for her because she is probably depressed (but acts almost normal) and her husband (his behavior is not normal ... how can someone live that way?)

Social services put a scare into them a couple of years ago, but her response is to shut everyone out and not ask for help. I am at a loss to figure out if she is a compulsive hoarder or mentally ill in some other vein, and what to do to support that nutritionally and non-pharma.
