Perhaps some see science differently than others. For me, science includes studying something, formulating theories, and then using the theories to make predictions. For example, Mendeleev, regarded by many as the father of the periodic table of elements, studied the properties of the elements, put his chart together, and noticed that certain elements were missing from the chart, and correctly predicted the existence of scandium, gallium, technetium and germanium, which at the time had not yet been discovered.
Science likes to have reproducible results. Substance X reacts with substance Y to produce substance Z. We know that combining oxygen with carbon leads to carbon dioxide, which result is reproduceable.
Scientists also find it convenient to classify materials using various reproducible tests, such as the iodine number of organic compounds which contain double bonds. This is useful in many areas, including polymerization reactions where one must know the degree of unsaturation present in the monomers if a stoichiometrically-correct product is to be obtained.
Science's motivation and goal is to exert control over nature's environment.
Religion and politics goal is to exert control over men. In this regard, science and religion and politics are fundamentally different both in their motivation and ends.
