Hello Nadia,
just to clarify the need for protein after fasting.
Shelton stated that there is a greater need for protein after fasting, but each case would have to be assessed individually, as this would depend entirely on the length of the fast and the condition of the faster.
A fast to completion would require greater amounts of protein to replenish the protein utilized during it than a short to medium fast: but with the return of hunger, the body is fully ready to accept food, and where the digestive system is extremely efficient with the assimilation and absorption of nutrients.
In a shorter fast where hunger has not returned, then the digestive system will need to be nurtured back into activity, over a longer period of time, and where the digestion of more concentrated protein foods (or any other foods come to that) just cannot be handled by the body in the short-term, as soon as would otherwise be the case.
This is the reason why Shelton broke fasts on liquids, as many fasting patients did not experience the return of hunger, with lack of time or economics being the limiting factor here.
