Here is my recipe for electrolyte replacement:
3/4 cup fresh lemon juice-it starts as an acid but metabolizes to an alkaline ash. Things like baking soda are often neutralized by stomach acids. Lemon juice is high in natural vitamin C and has the bioflavinoids to help with absorption. It also has an ample supply of potassium and some magnesium.
1/2 cup sweetener-maple syrup, sorghum, honey, evaporated cane juice or even plain sugar in an emergency. A sugar source is necessary for electrolyte minerals to be absorbed on a cellular level
1/4-1/2 teaspoon natural raw salt (I like Redmonds Realsalt for taste, mineral content and purity)
One half gallon of pure wate-distilled is best- avoid chemical laden tap water or potentially over mineralized well or spring water.
optional: pinch of potassium chloride salt substitute. Potassium is essential, but overdosing can be dangerous.
1-2 tablespoons of magnesium citrate, magnesium citrate is more readily absorbed by the body than either magnesium sulfate or magnesium oxide.
Drink four to eight ounces of this drink every hour. Sip it slowly and remember to also drink some pure water to help stimulate the kidneys and rid the body of unbalances.
By the way, adding a scoop of a good quality green drink powder will make the best alkalizing drink I know of. The plant based minerals are what the body needs for health and healing. With the exception of raw sea salt, it is best to stick with natural sources of electrolyte minerals to insure proper absorption and balance. Stay away of rock minerals.
Another thing, Gatorade does not have real fruit juice. It also has huge amounts of high fructose corn syrup which is highly inflammatory. While it is better than nothing, there are much better sources of minerals. When the body is in a weakened, unbalanced state one should seek to use products as pure and natural as possible.
