Re: No worms / parasites can be good!

I have heard several stories where some brave experimenters have purposely infected themselves with parasites to protect them from disease, and allergies.
In one case, a man who traveled to third world countries ingested specific type of Tapeworm and it protected him from all types of food-borne illnesses. Once back to his home country, he would take medication to purge the worm.
In another case, one guy purposely ingests hookworm to control allergies.
I am of the opinion that not enough is known about the affects of parasites on the human body, especially where infestations are endemic. There is also host specificity and strain and individual immunity factors consider.
Personally, I think parasite free is the way to go. But, like all situations in nature, there are exceptions.
P.S. many so called symbionts or commensual organisms can very quickly become infective if numbers go out of balance.
