I agree that the Europeans introduced many diseases that Native Americans had no natural immunity for. This was also one of the early examples of biological warfare when they provided tribes with blankets infected with smallpox. Too bad medicine had not advanced to the point where a vaccine could have protected them. Our babies have little passive immunity to the diseases endemic in the US. There are diseases in parts of the world that are not endemic to the United States, such as a strain of Menigitis prevalent in Sub Saharan Africa. Natural Polio has not occured in the US in some time but we continue to vaccinate because these diseases are a plane ride away. If the anti-vaccine movement continues to grow, we won't even have to worry about the plane.
