The term "conspiracy theory" has been planted in mind of the populace so that it has a negative connotation as well as an air of something that's never true. If it's a "theory" then it can't be a "fact".
However, every negative human event of a larger scale needs a Conspiracy behind it, otherwise the cause would be pure coincidence.
Once we realize that it does take a conspiracy to manipulate or create important and disruptive events, the only thing left is to find the conspirators.
Even a group of thugs on a dark street corner are conspirators. And what people do when they plan to rob a bank is also a conspiracy. When it comes to events on a larger scale, like wars, economic downturns, and everything else having to do with money and power, conspiracy is the way.
Lately conspirators have become smarter, so they try and make things look like accidents: car insurance scammers will make their conspiracy look like real accident, and so will those working on a much larger scale. What they do have in common is that closer examination of statistics, probability and above all - simple facts - reveals that there was no accident, only carefully prepared conspiracy. To hide the conspiracy even better, some elements of the event will be left to chance, within the boundaries of the conspiracy; like who else dies beside the intended victim (so the conspirator could say - "Why would I want to kill such and such...") or how some details of the event unfold. Those "accidental" details are later used as a proof that there was no conspiracy, only an accident. When researching statistics and probability, many interesting patterns emerge: stocks which are mostly recommended are usually those that perform worse then accidental pickings done by blindly throwing a dart at stock listing page, and government plans always give us exact opposite of intended result, even though we would expect them to be successful in at least some cases.
Conspiracies of highest order are those where many accidents lead to the ultimate goal: seemingly unrelated chance events all have a common thread and the final result is only known once all the "chance" events took place. This is similar to watching a good film where we are trying to connect the dots in a complex plot.
Best thing to do is to call things what they are: a conspiracy is not a theory. When a negative event is not accidental, it is called a conspiracy.
The advantage that conspirators have is that they are the planners and are therefore a step ahead. The disadvantage is that regardless of how well they planned it, the event stays recorded in history for ever and therefore the resources which may be used to analyze those are limitless. There is no limit to the amount of time after the event. With persistent effort, and with time, every conspiracy will be uncovered.
Hence, the last battle ground of conspirators is history and science, coupled with media.
