That's because MOST doctors DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER. They think that if it's in range, it's ok. I did some research on ferritin levels and I found on alopecia forums that patients that who saw hematologists reported that hematologists consider anything below 90 TOO LOW...

Many of today's doctors simply aren't competent enough to interpret labs. They only know if there is a problem if the labs flag it as too high or too low.

is SO great. She gives you a list of labs you need to get and she tells you what the optimal levels should be. My ferritin was too low as well as my B12, but because both were IN RANGE, the doctor I went to, didn't know that I was low in iron and B12.

Then if your doctor does not agree that you're hypo, join the yahoo group that Janie moderates: Natural Thyroid Hormone and post your results with ranges. The mods will help you interpret your labs. Don't forget to get a copy of ALL your labs. You'll need them to take to a new doc. There's a good docs list on that forum and if you post your location, someone near you can give you a doc if you don't find one on the list. You can also ask your pharmacist for a list of doctors who prescribe Armour. See if you can get him/her to tell you if these doctors prescribe 3 grains or more. So many docs who will prescribe armour go by the TSH and will not prescribe enough armour. Also, beware of endocrinologists. They are SLAVES to the TSH and MOST WILL NOT PRESCRIBE ANYTHING OTHER THAN SYNTHROID. Very few people convert T4 (synthroid) to T3 (what the body actually uses) and still continue to have hypo symptoms even though their TSH is "normal" and their doctors declare them "cured". I know, I was under the care of an endocrinologist for a year and a half and still felt hypo even though my TSH was "perfect" and my endo would not prescribe armour. Nor would he even consider the possibility that I had adrenal fatigue.

Don't forget to join the Iodine group on yahoo. Ovarian cysts are a symptom of iodine deficiency. So is fibrocystic breasts as well as hypothyroidism.
