Because people become invested, identified with, and come to own their choices... as if they are "theirs"... they want to express that their way is best and flawless.

Like ownership of property.

I once knew a financial board member of a church (I was on the same board), he and his wife gave perhaps more than 10% of their income and more than 10% of their time to the church... he seemed to be a great guy...

BTW - this whole thing had nothing to do with his wife... she was a sweetheart.

Then one day, a decision was made that he did not approve of and he threw a huge raging tantrum as if he OWNED the place and it was HIS alone. He resigned from the board, withdrew his membership, and pulled out his donations... never saw him again.

And the church breathed a sigh of relief...

You know the moral of the story...

He gave of his time and money with conditions (like the bailouts)... one cannot EVER do that... it is not true giving. There is always a bad ending.
