Re: my chow is 13 or 14 and wont move or eat

I am not Dr. Schulze but in the
time I have visited Curezone, I
have never seen him post here. I
was touched by your story though
and feel compelled to answer your
post.

I know it may not be easy to hear
the truth, but I am going to share
it since, when we lost our Mastiff
at the same age, I beat myself up
wondering if there could have been
anything more to do. It was my vet
who comforted me the most as I was
really distressed.

The truth is, she told me, that I
had a geriatric dog who had lived
long past the expected life span of
that breed of 8 years. She said dogs
knew when it was their time. They
might have tumors or other issues
going on but that once they stopped
eating and not moving, it was just
a matter of weeks, perhaps a month
at the most. Many people are faced
with the tough choice of watching
them die slowly, or being given an
injection to end their suffering.
With our own dogs, a couple now who
have grown old enough to leave us,
in the end, we could not endure the
pain of listening to their suffering
and so after rides in the car, a
favorite thing to do, and lots of
cuddling, ultimately, we drove them
to the vet and held them as they
breathed their last.

I hope you will not take this in
a harsh way. Your situation has
my greatest empathy as I have gone
the path you may be traveling. I have
laid two dog friends to rest. We had
them cremated and scattered their ashes
in the places where they loved to roam.

Being with your pet and holding them,
if that was something you used to do,
would be of greatest comfort. Dogs
live to love and be loved. It sounds
like you have cared for your pet
since you are not ready to have her
leave your life. Still, part of pet
ownership is the pain of knowing that
most likely, you will outlive them.

A vet will offer shots or pills to
delay this process for a week or
weeks, but my vet said, they do that
for the owner, not the pet as they
know it is just delaying the inevitable.

Your chow's lifespan is 11-15 years...

I wish you and your pet peace and the
comfort of having the time to say
goodbye.
