The HPV vaccine, Gardasil, has caused quite a debate since Texas Governor Rick Perry tried to pass an executive order that would mandate all girls entering sixth grade to get the vaccine. Merck, the company that makes the vaccine, says it is safe, effective and important. Of course Merck has a lot to gain financially if the vaccine becomes mandated. They, along with the CDC and the FDA, proclaim that 94 percent of adverse reactions reported to VAERS for Gardasil included syncope, pain, headache, nausea and fever and were “not serious.”

Upon further investigation, however, I discovered that the other supposed 6 percent of reports are absolutely devastating. “Anaphylactic shock,” “foaming at mouth,” “grand mal convulsion,” “coma” and “now paralyzed” are a few of the horrifying descriptions of Gardasil cases. There are conflicting numbers on the actual death-toll of estimated of girls whose families are convinced that their once-healthy daughters were killed by Gardasil.


Jamie Venice, whose parents are both doctors, passed out and had a seizure after her Gardasil shot. “She’s gone from a position of being a competitive varsity lacrosse player in high school to someone who’s chronically ill,” her father, Dr. Scott Ratner, has said. Her parents are now advocates against Gardasil.
Another case is that of Jenny Tetlock, whose dad started a blog that shows photos of his young daughter and reveals his frustration and anger in the form of a box counting the days that he has yet to get a response from the government’s Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment Network. As of July 2008, it was 28. Jenny passed away March 17.

One of the many other severe cases is a 15-year-old gymnast, cheerleader and honor roll student named Gabrielle in Kansas who has been diagnosed with Gardasil vaccine-related brain inflammation. After the first shot of Gardasil, her symptoms included muscle and joint pain, numbness and tingling in her hands and feet, headaches fatigue, a rash, dizziness, and lack of concentration After the second and third shots, she began losing her hair and developed seizures, bouts of paralysis, mini-strokes, partial loss of vision, severe chest pain and memory and speech loss. I’m sure the news of Jenny Tetlock’s tragedy hasn’t helped her and her family’s struggle to remain hopeful.
