Oily Rain in Central Texas

We collect rain water. Today when it rained, this was the first time we saw discolored dark amber colored rain. It was a bit sudsy too. It also had a crude oil like smell. It was nasty. We have pictures, but we're afraid to post them.

Anybody else collect any rain water?

Could it possible that it's chemicals off the shingles from a new roof?

It just rained again, this time the water was normal. The water didn't smell. Maybe the earlier front had the oil in the rain, but not the 2nd round.

This is not normal.

I have no idea what was in the rain collected earlier, but I know we have never seen anything like this before. We've been collecting rain water for many years due to droughts in our area in the last couple of years.

Again, this is not normal. I have nothing to gain from sharing this information. This is just an FYI.

The consistency was very watered down. It smelled like oil. We're not sure if it was oil. Additional samples would be great.

"Well, it stopped raining. The SMALL sample looks cloudy, but is not discolored otherwise. Its odor is more a fishy smell than anything near oil. It does not feel oily to the touch.

So - that's GOOD news. I'll keep sampling, but be warned, it doesn't rain here much, but if we find anything the OP and I will keep you posted. Right OP? =)"

"dispersant may evap with water and retain some compounds of oil which would give it the color. The soapiness could be the solvents used."

That's exactly what we were thinking. Again, it was not an oily consistency, just appeared to look and smell of oil. But the consistency was water.

Thank you. We'll continue to keep our eye on the rain water as well. It's not supposed to rain again until Wednesday (30%) chance.
