How would your brother find out? You do know that counselors are bound by law to respect and protect patient privacy. In other words, they can't tell anyone about their sessions with their patients. If you went to a counselor and s/he then told your brother about it, then s/he would be brought up on charges for breaching patient confidentiality.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that all hell would break loose in your world if anyone found out you were seeing a counselor...? Again, who would know unless you told them?

I guess what you're saying is that you hang onto the pain because it is familiar to you. Also, I'm guessing that the thought of making changes in your life---even if they are changes for the better---scares you. Having some apprehension regarding change is normal. For example, I once read that moving is stressful---even if it is a move that is wanted.

All that said, if you remain stagnant, your life will continue to be unhappy. It's clear that you don't like this. After all, you did write here asking for advice. So...start taking that big leap by calling the hotline. The first step is usually the hardest but once you get through it, the rest is much easier.
