I recently refound a piece I had writen years ago debating Aurobindo and Steiner's take on the evolution of humanity.
While I have always thought very highly of these two and their works, I have at the same time always felt that their position on the evolution of man en masse was too created, too dream like, too simplisticly hopefull. Rather than being part of ultimate reality I saw it as a sophisticated man centered way to interact rather than transcend, while also justifying that conceptual man oriented interaction. Similar to how you worded it in your post that the concept is a overlayering of mentality. Not withstanding that these two are giants in the field of personel evolution and subsequent sharing.
I thought of how, irregardless of Krishnamurtis personel experiences with people and their well meaning manipulation of him, he was also being nurtured at the time of this concept's being reinvested in spirutal/philosophical society at large. Be it Aurobindo, Steiner or Nietzche.
So perhaps as things get reletivly more difficult, socially or personelly, we do immaturely reach out for larger dreams so as to find hopeful security in things and events, or evan possible that the largest cyclic round (cosmic yugas) are slightly missinterpreted seeing them as potential vs unavoidable. I think it is likely not actually being a matter of evolution, but one of unavoidable actualution, such that the superman race is in our future, just unavoidable.
However that may be, I can only see the benefit in such positions/dialoges/philosophies either way, in that its a personel trip we are all on, untill we wake up and the personel is lost in a unity where rather than considering humanity as a whole, our only care is in gently assisting the individual identities we find around us to share in the potential super life existing amongst the seemingly brutal dream.
