The ammo box solution should work, as long as the electronics stashed inside are insulated from the metal of the box.

A metal file cabinet should do the same, as long as its electronic contents are insulated from the metal of the cabinet.

Or a metal safe.

I am wondering if a metal storage shed couldn't be sealed properly and made to work too..

IMPORTANT => The metal containment cannot have gaps or breaks in continuity anywhere on its conductive surface. Meaning you may have to seal cracks between lids and drawers or doors, etc., with some conductive material, like metal tape or heavy foil.

Requiring a fancy calculated multi-layer lattice would be neat if one has the exact specs of the EMP in advance and they are accurate, but is almost an un-doable thing when you know the specs will be hidden until too late if at all possible, as the track record of this event has indicated thus far.

So that is an unworkable solution for almost everybody who doesn't have a lab and a metal shop at their disposal.
To believe it is the only answer would only breed hopelessness. Plus it would be a shame to go through all that and then find your freq calc is an iota off.

EMP protection measures are mostly still untested territory, and the best info is apparently still Military Classified. There is very little dependable info out there on it. Although I do have a few radio pdf's that address the effects of EMP on radio equipment, they still are loaded with disclaimers and say things like 'we think this should work..'.

Just make the whole container surface solidly conductive and let the calculating/manufacturing nightmare go. Insulate the contents from the conductive container, otherwise all effort is wasted.

Ammo box and/or metal safe and/or metal file cabinet is a better solution than the microwave, which has gaps (i.e., pinholes through the shielded front door so you can see the interior light). Plus they leak like crazy anyway.

If I had nothing but a microwave though, I'd get out the aluminum foil and use it.

VEHICLES:
PS: Much older vehicles (pre-computerized) might actually survive an EMP, although you still might have to re-charge the battery. Newer, more computerized vehicles are less likely to survive. The good news is, a car is insulated somewhat by its tires, and its electronics may be somewhat shielded by its metal body (If the body of your vehicle is metal, lol).
