Rather, food grade diatomaceous earth makes a very effective natural insecticide. The insecticidal quality of diatomaceous earth is due to the razor sharp edges of the diatom remains. When diatomaceous earth comes in contact with the insects, the sharp edges lacerate the bug’s waxy exoskeleton and then the powdery diatomaceous earth absorbs the body fluids causing death from dehydration. It is gaining popularity to assist in the fight against bed bugs.

Therefore it is used at such places as grain storage bins or placed in animal food to eliminate insects trying to consume the animal's food AND when eaten by the animal it can kill internal parasites as it travels in one end and out the other.

Gardeners sometimes sprinkle it on the ground to kill crawling insects but must re-apply after a rain.
