Hi Redbird
Thanks for your e-mail.
I hope the clindamycin/alcohol works for you. It seems to have helped a few people on the forum.
And I like to stress to people - this isn't a home remedy - it was prescribed to me by a dermatologist.
Have you tried using a 70% isopropyl alcohol rather than the 99%? You should be able to get that at your local pharmacy or supermarket.
In regards to your question about a Dermaroler (TM) - I've not heard of that treatment before. So I can't endorse it one way or the other. But what the heck - if your FD was as bad as mine, then this little gadget couldn't make it any worse. But it wouldn't hurt to check with your GP or Dermatologist.
LOL - I looked at their website and it looks like a little mini lawn aerator.... and I suppose the theory would be the same. You drag this little spiky roller over your skull, and it creates little holes so the medication can penetrate deeper. Sounds reasonable, and even if it only scrapes away that gross sticky exudite that comes with FD, that in itself would be groovy.
The other side of that argument would be that the FD skin is already so cracked, popped and totally buggered that the benefit of a Dermaroller (TM) would arguably be negligible, especially if you're already exfoliating with a head shaving regime, which already causes thousands of microabrasions and retracts the hair, opening the follicles (just like you see on those Gillette (TM) twin blade commercials).
However their website also reckons that the The Dermaroller (TM) is a skin needling device listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) as a medical device (Class IIa) .... so that looks legit enough.
And the $75 price tag is less of a cash layout than a lot of the creams and ointments that i tried over the years (gods - I must have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on useless salves and lotions).
If you do decide to fork out some cash for a Dermaroller (TM) or any similar product - share the results with the good folk on this forum.
All the best with overcoming your FD - and top points to you for tackling this beast.
Cheers
Rot

Hey rot, I suffer from folliculits like you once did. It is really a menacing condition and consumes me in a way that I am not proud of. In reading your anecdotal report of success with clindamycin tabs and 99% iso alcohol I decided to round up the supplies and give this potential treatment a try. I am still waiting from the alcohol to arrive, but in the mean time I was wondering what you thought about adding a dermaroller (a rolling device with hundreds of tiny needles 1.5mm long) to the treatment would do. I shave my head, not to the bone, but I thought that creating small little holes deep into the dermis could allow for the abx and alcohol to penetrate further into the deep infected areas. Hope that everything is going well for you and I look forward to hearing back..
