Lactic Acid for Cellular Energy

I've been doing some research on how lactic acid is used for cellular energy. Some of the sources that I have found state that many cells need to break down glucose into lactic acid before they can be used for energy. Has anyone else done research on this and if so can you give links to research and studies on this matter?

At any rate, I had a couple of thoughts regarding this. If it is true that glucose needs to be broken down into lactic acid in many instances (not all), then could the lack of beneficial bacteria responsible for producing lactic acid cause the body to not receive the correct amount of lactic acid and instead receive an overabundance of glucose (possibly leading to candida overgrowth and other sugar related problems)? Also, regarding the pH level in the intestine, it appears that most naturally occurring gut bacteria has a relatively small window of pH levels where it can comfortably grow at optimal levels. If the pH level becomes either too alkaline or too acidic, the proper bacteria will die (or possibly change into a more aggressive form?), whereas the candida and other bacteria that are more resilient will start to grow and multiply. This would explain why it doesn't seem possible to repopulate the gut with good bacteria just by taking probiotic supplements (because they just die when they get into they are exposed to the improper pH levels). This could also explain why some people have adverse reactions to taking probiotic supplements (because some of the bacteria in the probiotics that should work to help the body may turn to a pathogenic form if it is in the improper pH level).

Well these are just thoughts I had as I was researching this, but if anyone has links to studies regarding any of these topics it would be greatly appreciated.
