I'm at my wits end.
I am 23 years old, male.
At the age of 13 I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis of which I have suffered with since, being hospitalised three times due to the pain, and complications including the pain spreading to my hips.
2 years after being diagnosed with it I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, extremely severe.
At the moment I am at the edge of saving my colon from having to be removed. I am studying nutrition and have learnt of the molecular mimicry and leaky gut theory of spondylitis.
I have been on antibiotics, immuno suppresants, NSAids etc on and off most of my life and I'm sure these have contributed to my ill health, and therefore i lean towards the idea that healing my gut somehow will help me with these problems.
According to the research I have been doing about leaky gut and spondylitis; it is caused by a bacteria klebsiella which have antigens (protein markers) which are very similar to that of collagen in the spine, which causes the immune system to mis-identify.
I also have candida according to the 'spit test' I did. I am not sure how accurate that test is though but I wouldn't be surprised.
I have started a no-starch diet but am finding it very difficult. I am two days in and today I experienced hypoglycemia for no reason I can think of. I have been eating a lot of complex carbs, salads, protein and taking a multi vitamin and B complex with fish oil.
I am at my wits end here and I'm really holding on for my life. I do not want to have my colon removed. Being a student of naturopathic nutrition, I learnt about a famous herbalists 'formula' endorsed by well respected ND Joseph Pizzorno called 'Bastyrs formula' for ulcerative colitis and have purchased it.
I also purchased a strong probiotic, pancreatin tablets, clove, wormwood and black wallnut.
I have no idea if all the money i have spent is going to help.
I also take glutemine once a day and slippery elm twice a day in hope that itl help heal my intestinal walls.
I am not considering cutting all sugar out of my diet and doing the candida diet along with no starch. This will be extremely hard though and I am quite scared of taking the leap. I will have to eat A LOT and urgh!
What are your suggestions or ideas? (taking into account my history etc). Please dont just suggest an antifungal supplement.
