The acupuncturist that I visit studied a form of medicine called Kouhou-ha (古方派). The teachings of Kouhou-ha pre-date other forms including Gosehou-ha (後世方派) and Five Element theory (五行思想), and therefore contains a smaller number of herbal formulae.

Most of the English language information about Chinese herbology is based on/translated from Five Element theory. And while it's relatively easy to research different formulae, I do not have sufficient knowledge of energy flow to assess whether a particular combination of herbs will be beneficial for my condition. The acupuncturist I visit does have a strong knowledge of energy flow, however because he did not study Five Element theory, he too cannot tell whether the formulae I select are relevant.
