Of course, we have to depend on what others are interpreting as to what has been written.
I have heard by some that have said that the Gnostics said the world was invaded, and that invasion was more like it spread like a virus.

Regardless of what is interpreted to have been written, It really doesn't seem to matter who really came first. Its a chicken or the egg type of scenario.

The real bottom line is: Whatever is the real situation, how is it relevant to one's own growth in consciousness?

The fact of the matter is that the situation in the world provides the perfect backdrop to turn one's attention away from what is going on, from the madness that is going on outside of oneself, and turn one's attention inwardly, within, with the only question that has ever been worth asking - "Who am I?"
