if i were you I would get a second opinion.
When there is infection at the bottom of the root of a tooth the only options are to have the tooth removed or a root canal treatment.
The fact that your dentist didn't sound sure there was infection at the base of the root suggests the x-ray was a bit inconclusive.
What were your symptoms?
Generally if your tooth was sensitive to hot and cold and you experienced a sharp stabbing pain that went away after a few minutes your tooth can usually be saved with just a normal filling.

However if your pain was dull/throbbing/constant or work you up at night, or you have been in pain for a long time without seeking treatment, or experienced pain on biting localised to a certain tooth, the likelihood is the nerve in your tooth is dead and the only options left are root canal of extraction.

Unfortunately if your nerve is dead/dying the only other option than root canal is having the tooth out sorry :(
