Actually, if you don't have medicaid a dermatologist visit can be pricy (especially if you have a high deductible). The medications they prescribe can be expensive, as well. I work in a pharmacy so I see a lot of medications and prices through various insurances. I have been to two different dermatologists about this so far. I haven't really gotten very noticeable flakes but I have gotten bumps that can be painful and ooze or pop like pimples. They are embarrassing if they can be seen by others or even if they can't be seen. They make me feel disgusting. The first dermatologist I saw looked at me for a second and said I had SD. He gave me Ciclopirox shampoo and doxycycline. It cleared my scalp temporarily but it came back. When I saw my current dermatologist, I had no bumps to show him because I had to wait a couple months to get an appointment. He told me to use a shampoo with ketoconazole in it. There is an over-the-counter product with ketoconazole, called nizoral. It should b4 with the dandruff shampoos. He also told me to take doxycycline (a $4 antibiotic depending on where you go) for 6 months. My old derm only had me on it for a couple weeks. He thinks it should clear it up...whatever it is. I would recommend you find a dermatologist that has a good reputation and spends enough time with patients. If you are willing to seek treatment, you will want a doctor that actually wants to help you. Anyway, I've been on my antibiotic for about 2 months and my scalp is doing pretty well. No new bumps. Hopefully, this will work. My mom has the same problem as me but she just deals with it. I would rather attempt to treat it because it lowers my self esteem and makes me crazy.
