I haven't read Dr. Karasch's oil pulling piece so you know more than I. The only thing you could be doing wrong that might change the color would be how vigorously you swish it around. I've never found anything different result from swishing it around heavily other than a sore jaw.

Keep the oil moving - yes. Forcefully - no.

It's kind of like brushing your teeth. Can you turn the technique into a precise collection of rules and techniques to maximize it's effectiveness? Absolutely. But the important thing is just to keep doing it - even if you haven't mastered the technique to perfection.

Even more so with OP since there's so little technique involved. For me the only thing you really need to be careful about is spitting it out and rinsing properly. Averaging 20 minutes is next, though many times I've gone way under or over.

If you just do it regularly you'll see fantastic benefits overtime. Don't get hung up on the details - REALLY!
