Hi Everyone. I’m a 51 year female who is pretty healthy but has had a life-long problem with constipation (like since grade school). There were a few years that I was dependent on harsh laxatives, but they started creating real problems so I weaned myself off of them several years ago and started using magnesium citrate. I’m utterly dependent on the magnesium if I hope to have a prayer of having a bowel movement. I eat a really healthy diet - primarily raw, heavy on the vegetables, some non-tropical fruit, nuts, seeds, some beans, etc. (it’s a pretty good diet). I’m also a calorie restrictor. I started calorie restriction about 2 years ago and slowly lost about 30 lbs. I’m now 5’ 7” and 123 lbs. About 6 months ago I took it a step further and started every other day fasting. So I eat about 3,000 calories on my feed day and nothing on the fast day. This has worked really well for me, but not so well that my chronic constipation issues have resolved. Sooo, I started a water fast. I’m on day 4 and doing fine. Day 3 I had a fairly normal sized bowel movement. Today (day 4) I continued feeling tenderness in my abdomen so I went to a colon hydrotherapist and got a colonic. I was a little conflicted about the rightness of this, but after seeing the very large quantity of rock-hard, dehydrated stool he flushed out, I think I did the right thing. I’m sorry if this all falls under the heading of too much information, but I’ve been searching the web high and low for information specifically related to complete bowel dysfunction and water fasting. I’m so hoping that I can begin having normal, un-aided bowel movements at the conclusion of my fast. Anything you could share would be appreciated – especially opinions/advice as to how long I should water fast. On a different subject, I recently had a consultation with a doctor of cellular biology. The man is 83 and has the mind a 25 year old (he really walks the walk). He’s not opposed to fasting, but he told me something I’ve never heard before – that people who fast for extended periods (beyond 10 days) can become so clean and sensitive to toxins that they can actually set themselves up for cancer later, especially if they don’t follow up with a really pristine diet (forevermore). Has anyone ever heard this before? Lastly, I’m post-menopausal and take hormone replacement. I’m also hypo-thyroid and take Armour Tyroid. I only started the thyroid med about a month ago. My thyroid is underactive, but not to the degree that I’m medication-dependent. I’ve been doing hormone replacement (estrogen, testosterone, progesterone) for the past two years because I believe that keeping optimum levels for as long as possible is good. However, I do understand that fasting can amplify the effects of meds in our system. With that in mind I’ve halved my dosages. Is this a good idea, or should I quit them completely until I’m done? Sorry for the long-winded post. I look forward to hearing your feedback. Many thanks.
