My theory would be a localised issue, caused by whatever factor which really could be different for a lot of sufferers, which has evolved towards the same form. That would be why people, despite they share the same symptoms, are convinced of a different origin than an other could propose.

The symptoms would suggest an isolated case of Psoriasis with a renawal too fast and a slighty inflammation in the concerned area. Also, the surrounding zone is propably the seat of a thin desquamation surely related to the lips condition.
We all are in good health, no similar problem on the rest of the body, the few analysis don't show anything.
This seems to be only an affection of our lips. Given the rarity of this condition, physicians are used to confuse it and just prescribe ineffective topicals. I think it could be treated locally by an appropriated medication.
