I can't say that there is specific support group like you describe! However you seem to be the one who might be able to help him the most! By understanding what he is going through!
If he is still functioning in society ,workplace etc, and is not ill or on a self destructive down spiraling path and realises he needs to quite he is capable of quiting on his own self determination! This is of course not an approved or scientific method ,as if there is one ,but many others have done just that!
First he must realise he is dealing with a powerful addictive drug alcohol and the physical and mental pain he feels is possible to overcome, many have done so! An awareness of self and family or friend based support group can be the best thing there is to help someone do battle with the demons of alcohol! Knowledge and understanding can be the best weapons there is to fight addictions! You search for help is one of the first step to rcovery and your support along with his commitment is the basic ingredience to change! Take pride in your desire to help and dont let his demons or pitfalls let you feel its not worth the attempt to help a fellow human being! A caveat though before I end this post ! Your involvement should be hinged on his commitment and any abusive behavoir that becomes evident may be a sign for you to re evaluate your abilty to help and do not let your self become a victim to his addiction! But if he is forthright and commited and you make progress however small ,although do expect set backs to a reasonable point, much can be accomplished without an institutional support group!
Hope this helps but once again I must mention that although support groups like AA have many success stories that are well publisized many fail that you never hear about ,so your friend is not alone in that aspect! Grog
