It seems that your being independant makes him feel very insecure and that he doesn't feel that he is interesting enough for you, that you don't love him as much as he does, so that's why he moved out, to make you feel that you have to show more affection to him.

It seems that he thinks that you just lived with him as you would with anyone else, that he wasn't that important for you as you are for him, so that he would be sure of your love if you married him. He needs to get out, because he is sad about those thoughts, and hope that you will understand his feelings and show your love.

If you love him so much and you think he is the one, just be closer to him and more present to him and affectionate, and maybe spend less time out with the others, and more with him, if possible.
Date him, what do you have to lose anyway ? you mentionned that you could lost valuable time if it doesn't work. I would be very sad if I were him to know that you consider loving him and giving him a chance and making him happy is losing valuable time.Think of it.

You also mentioned that you aren't getting younger and you are scared, but you know there is no specific age nor it is never too late for love, there is love possible at any age. This is not because you would marry younger that it would be a better marriage.

If you love him, go, and show your love, date him.
