Your story sounds so much like mine. For me it was food related but it was also deeper. The root for me was a clogged gallbladder, 18 flushes later my acne is almost a thing of the past, i still get a few pimples now and then but my skin looks so nice and healthy now and i know that eventually i'll have my gallbladder totally clean i will be 100 percent clear. The hardest part was when i stopped doing all the things i was doing and my skin started the long process of healing and detoxing. So many years of using clearasil and other similar products =/ In the mean time i would recommend cutting out all wheat and dairy for awhile as those were my main triggers and seem to be the most common.
