Question about Caffeine

I rarely drink caffeine anymore, in part because of it's effects on me. I'm just incredibly curious as to why it affects me the way it does though.

If I'm tired, caffeine will only give me a boost early in the morning, and then only if I drink a lot of water (I drink 6-8 glasses a day, so I shouldn't be dehydrated). I notice that if i just have a small amount of caffeine with a little sugar it helps me focus, but it isn't a repeatable thing. In the evenings caffeine makes it easy for me to stay awake, but makes me feel so braindead that I feel like a zombie. I can't focus or concentrate. Why is this?
