Kitty's hairball problem or something else?

My cat, Dusty, has been coughing and hacking, like they do coughing up a hairball, but she hasn’t coughed anything up. She has long hair, and has expelled her share of hairballs before. This hacking has has been going on for a few days now. I’ve been giving her some hairball gel, but it hasn’t seemed to help. She’s eating and pooping, but I think a bit less than usual, and she doesn’t seem to be feeling well. I’ll be taking her to the vet if there is no marked improvement today, but I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on what this could be. Many thanks, M
