        Hi,

We get goat milk from a local farm because it is the closest to our house. I would have gotten cow milk if it had been closer. Although I was happy it was goat as I just feel better about it over all.

I have a friend who gets cow milk from a farm that offers both -- I have borrowed from her when we visit, and there is not that much of a difference in taste, etc. Her boys are all very healthy, too.

The real issue for me after a lot of reading over a long time is processed/grain-fed vs. fresh/grass-fed (and, as the other poster pointed out, milk vs. no milk at all -- I don't give my girls milk for calcium and agree you don't have to, and have some friends who don't do milk and also have very healthy kids!). I use processed milk as a condiment (1/2 + 1/2 for coffee, an old habit!) but wouldn't buy non-grass-fed milk for my kids again -- when we run out of raw, I will sometimes get pasturized that has been grass-fed. I'm hoping to go through one more summer/fall with the raw milk and then stop getting it.

Why milk at all? I do think that after reading the Weston A. Price/Nina Planck stuff most recently that there is a strong case to be made for the nutritive value of raw milk. My twins are very small but really healthy -- and I can see such a difference between them and other toddlers in terms of illness. They have never gotten an infection that required antibiotics, never have yellow or green gunk coming out of their noses, etc. -- I attribute some of that to their not being vaccinated, but a lot of it to not drinking processed milk because those symptoms, plus gross diapers, existed when we went on a trip last summer and could only get processed milk -- in retrospect, I would not have bothered to get it at all had I known how much they would react to it. People think a runny nose or a "cold" is normal for children, and I think those things are often the result of drinking past. milk! And I also think that even being slightly sick all the time is worse than being really sick for a couple of days here and there -- i.e. I'd rather get the flu than have allergies -- because you just don't function at a high level -- I worry about the chronically slightly sick child and wonder if processed milk consumption can just keep these little ones feeling "off" and interfere with their acuity and learning (any comments welcome!).

So I think, in order of importance, I'd ask myself (about milk for kids):

        1. Is fresh, grass-fed milk available?
        2. Do I want to use milk at all?
        3. Goat v. Cow? (and my answer would be -- whichever is closest/most convenient)

Although, I must say, there are few things more adorable in this world than baby goats...and seeing them/being involved with a farm is a great thing about getting fresh milk!

        Laura
