Bright idea???

How about we teach them to prefer certain elements of food? That our family prefers certain TASTES and FRESHNESS, and how we get them?

Which salts we like, and how much...the pleasures of seaweeds.

Which sweeteners we prefer...a touch of blackstrap molasses, or one of the many honeys, maple syrup, and so on. Fireweed honey is wonderful.

How to pick just the right greens, and flavorful greens, for salads...and how to dress them to make superior salads...varying from day to day...sorrel, arugula, lettuces, parsley, basil...with certain oils, and tart lemon, lime, rice wine, apple cider vinegar...just enough of which, when.

Not disdain, but applause when the best combinations are achieved.

A pregnant pause over the first taste...anticipation...and a level of praise - nice, very nice, well done, excellent, superb! Everyone present at the table gets their day to be the official taster of the salad, or the star dish. Everyone else awaits their estimation, before diving in.

...The way chefs, gourmets, and wine-lovers taste for excellence.

Then, little ones learn how to choose, to a standard...how to appreciate, and to praise.

They could even learn, "Oh yes, my liver loves this," "My pancreas is happy," "My bones are celebrating," "I want a dish of this after jogging!"

Likely momma and dad would be learning at the same time.

Shopping could become an 'event', even when there are only a few coins to be spent. Where will we find the treasure that gives happiness to our family?

Now, how can I get back to those days of wonder in my child's life?
