I know that Thorvin makes both animal & people grade Kelp, but didn't know the difference. Just got an e-mail from Wolf Creek regarding my question as to which one they sell. It seems that the animal grade which they sell, doesn't have much iodine --
This kelp is organic and "approved" for use in animal feed and fertilizer. Thorvin advises the ONLY differences between this organic kelp and their "human" grade kelp are:
#1 - The human grade kelp is approved for use in humans (certifications required for this)
#2 - The human grade kelp is a laminara digitata and the animal feed is ascophyllum nosodosum
#3 - The only nutritional differences - human grade has 5000 to 7000 ppm iodine and less than 1% fat
The animal feed grade has only 700 ppm iodine and 2% fat.
IF they got the approval for the animal feed to be used in humans, the cost of the feed product would increase dramatically and likely those using it as animal feed may switch to a cheaper kelp or not use it at all. This is the #1 mineral my own livestock consume and I KNOW it is a huge reason we never have birthing problems, their coats are always healthy and shiney, and they don't get sick. I must say, I have a few die hard organic people who eat the kelp in their food and I tried putting some TK on my breakfast food one morning and I was NOT happy with the taste. I have considered encapsulating it for myself, since I see the huge health benefits for my 100 animals here, but since I encapsulate a number of herbs that aren't palitable, I have not had the time or gumption to encapsulate the kelp "too".
Hope this helps.
