Yes, it is frightening, especially since most of the people who guzzle the stuff do not believe it could possibly be BAD for you. 

My son was in the car yesterday (he tried to order a diet coke and I gasped at him, ARE YOU MAAAAD?  his father drinks them like....er, soda pop) and the conversation went something like, 'if it was PROVABLE, Moooom (eyeball roll) that it is baaad for you they would just ban it, they would HAVE to because of all the law suits'

'you mean like cigarettes, son?  Like how they immediately banned cigarettes as soon as they discovered how bad they are?'

-end conversation-

Maybe even worse than the folks who get the overt symptoms from aspartame poisoning are the people who consistently poison themselves on not such a noticeable level.  You will never convince them to stop because in their mind there is no reason to.

I am lucky that the first time I ever tried a diet drink with aspartame I got an immediate, noticeable bad reaction to it. 

Sadly, now it is getting harder and harder to avoid it in things as they are lacing everything with it. =(
