breaking fast, kidney stones and thinking about Spring (a lot)

water fasting, kidney stones, spring is coming

So...blogging is acting weird or maybe it is my computer today. I will try this again, but this is the last time, I mean it :-)

So I made it 14 days on water...pure water, no supplements, no lemon juice, no taste testing of any kind. I find it interesting that with each fast (well, the last two really) when I get to the time I had "in mind" to break, I really just feel like continuing at that point. Hunger is gone completely for me by day 7 or so (I keep reading about how hunger ends for people typically after 3 days or so - not really for me). But, when it is gone, it is really totally gone, though signs of detox are still there - tongue weirdness, aches in odd places, etc. I know I am still in "detox mode". I know next fast I am going to keep my mind open on the timeframe.

A few days into "refeeding" (which I was taking the most care I ever have taken in doing) I experienced stabbing pain in my lower back, on the left. I knew it was my kidney, and I had been having pain in my kidneys through the fast but totally attributed it to detox. My drug use (both prescription and indiscriminate - sometimes hard to tell the difference) have surely left their mark on my kidneys and liver, and so I don't really get surprised with heavy detox signs. But, this time it was a stone...I endured the pain for about 6 hours or so, and as it got worse, I called a good friend to bring me to the ER. It was one of those things where I was 98% sure I knew what was going on, but I was just scared enough to go (eerily reminiscent of my first gallbladder attack 10 years ago when I thought I was dying!)

So I took a gamble and decided to tell the ER doc about the fasting...I wanted his two cents on if my fasting could somehow be related to this stone passing. He was actually pretty cool and asked me a few questions (that made it sound like he was generally interested) about the fasting, then told me he believed that water fasting wouldn't necessarily have prompted a stone to pass. Since I can't find any information (yet) that supports this totally, or disputes it, I am not ruling out his opinion. Though, I have a feeling that my poor diet in the past 8 years or so, along with perhaps not staying hydrated enough while detoxing may have had something to do with the stone passing now of all times. Either way, they did a (very expensive, I am sure) CT Scan which showed only the one 5mm stone, and not much else...good. Bad enough I will be paying for this ER visit for months (years? I am kinda broke...) to come. The good? If I ever have an attach like this again, I will a.) know what it is b.) ride it out for at least 24 hours to see if things pass naturally c.) prevent a future one hopefully...I've been reading about ideas for breaking up potential stones that may be lurking (lemon juice seems to be a popular one...i dig that, so no problem adding that into my water intake). Oh, and since I don't exactly have the wherewithal to be a purist (at this stage of my life, anyway) I tucked that little bottle of percosets in the back of the medicine cabinet just in case I DO have to ride another one of these out on my own ;) old habits die hard, at least for me.

So the next few weeks will involve: playing with my dehydrator that finally came off backorder (yay!), finishing reading "the miracle of fasting" and consider which fasting book to tackle next, figuring out how to effectively "rebound" (so far I am only brave enough to jog a little and jump around a bit, but it is fun and more of a workout than I thought it would be), walk around the neighborhood and enjoy the changing seasons...oh, I am doing that a lot lately (looking toward Spring instead of dreading it). I can honestly say I have dreaded every Spring since about 2001...damn, that is a long time. And, I have been hospitalized usually in March timeframes, when I begin to look back on patterns of depression issues over the years...every day, I think a bit about how much there is to look forward to in Spring and Summer...the need for less clothing, wearing flip flops, the warmth of the sun, that "slowed down feeling" of hot summer days, going fishing, all the farmer's markets and summer fruits (I just thought about White Peaches and enormous bunches of fresh dill that cost next to nothing mmmmm), how it will feel fasting in the warmth as opposed to my three "winter fasts", visiting the shoreline from time to time when the gas budget permits, going for hikes and looking at all the stuff that grows when it is warm (and maybe learning more about what grows locally...i've always been passively interested in weeds and stuff, and now I think i'd like to make an effort to learn more), going crabbing with my friend Jon who lives on the beach (we do it for fun and put them all back...I think we both just find it highly entertaining)...these are all good things...there is so much to look forward to, and a lot I am probably not even thinking of at the moment. Oh, and the next fast of course...I haven't picked a day to start, but I am thinking early to mid April.

Happy Easter! kozzz =)
