Raw and Non-Raw -- Healthy -- Binge Food

As someone who has spent most of my life addicted to the foods that are the worst of the worst for health, turning to non-raw but HEALTHIER foods when I binge helps a lot in keeping me on my chosen course!

This is one that food addict types like me may be able to relate to. It is supposed to be a condiment -- something to sprinkle on a rice dish or whatnot -- but I rarely eat rice anymore and I still want the sprinkles.

GOMASHIO (non-raw)

1/4 to 1/2 cups sesames with hulls
Celtic sea salt, lightly to taste

That's the whole ingredients. The tools are a saucepan or frying pan -- hopefully NOT Teflon or aluminum which put toxins in your food (as do most stainless steel pots and pans) -- and a mortar and pestle are ideal. However, if you don't have a mortar and pestle you can use a small electric coffee grinder or even just skip the grinding altogether, although to me it is not really Gomashio until it's been ground up a bit!

Just heat the pan to a medium-high heat, dry -- adding no oils or water -- and put the sesame seeds straight into the pan. I also add the salt at this point as well but you can wait until later. Usually the seeds will do "mini-pops" kind of like a very low-key version of corn popping. You want the sesame seeds to get just a LITTLE browner but not burn them. Once they are popping -- if they pop -- that's a good indication you are just about done! This really does not take long.

Then I put the seeds in my mortar and pestle (actually a surabachi, if you have one is MADE for gomashio -- it's one of those clay bowls with swirling grooves and a wooden pestle). Mine is a Thai granite mortar and pestle and releases me from any need for a surabachi, though it is much too heavy to travel with, if that is a consideration. I got my mortar and pestle from
-- and I got the BIGGEST one -- after first trying several sizes that were smaller, I just kept giving away my old ones as I moved up the ladder in size. I just love, love, love my Thai granite mortar and pestle...!!!

This is great "binge" food for me because it is very quick and easy to fix -- and less waiting than if I popped out to go to the corner store! At the same time it seems to satisfy the same thing within me that craves things like deeply disturbingly illness-causing deep-fried and wheat things!!


When I was a little kid I remember staying at a baby-sitter's house. She had six kids and was making chocolate frosting for a cake one day and, on my way to play outdoors, I eagerly asked if I could "lick the bowl" when she was done. She said no, but I could have a little taste and handed me a spoon or whatnot with just a teeny bit of chocolate frosting on it. It was a moment I never forgot because at that point I made a solemn promise to myself: "When I grew up I'm going to fix myself a big bowl of chocolate frosting and eat the whole thing!!!" I kept that promise just the other day when I made this other binge-style -- yet healthy -- food. I call it "Avocado Secret Chocolate Frosting" because no one but the person who made it can tell there is avocado in it!


raw cacao powder
raw honey or raw agave
dash or few of vanilla extract
pinch of Celtic sea salt
bit of coconut oil (optional)

Smash up the avocado, add up to 1 tsp. vanilla extract and up to one large pinch of good quality salt plus the coconut oil if you are using that. Then smash-and-stir in the raw cacao powder and sweetener until you get that "just right" kind of frosting texture that has "just enough" sweetener to please the palate. No need to make it any sweeter than necessary! I have found that over time if I will just make things a TAD less sweet than what I am used to that in very little time I find myself actually PREFERRING less sweetness, especially in my chocolate goodies.

You can of course use this to "frost" a raw cookie or cake or berries. Me? I just eat it straight out of the bowl. After all, I'm a woman of my word...! (smile)
