Chronic glaucoma is maybe the most common of all eye diseases, and affects people in older years. It is thought that one or two percent of the population over 40 years suffers from chronic glaucoma, and about 20 percent of them blind. According to recent research, chronic glaucoma is not a disease, yet more disorders lead to damaging of the optic nerve and characteristic visual field disorders.
The increased pressure is not the most important symptom
Eye vision is gradually reduced until the patient becomes completely blind. Previously it was thought that the increased intraocular pressure is a major symptom of the disease that arise from it, and other symptoms. Today we know certainly that elevated intraocular pressure is a risk factor only. If the pressure is regulated, disease will not progress and we can hope that it will be preserved existing function of the eye. In addition to the fact that the increased intraocular pressure is not the first and most important symptom, is the existence of glaucoma with normal or low pressure, as well as the existence of elevated intraocular pressure without having to develop the image of glaucoma - a condition known as ocular hypertension.
At people with ocular hypertension, permanent or temporary, more or less, intraocular pressure is above the normal limit (12-22 mm Hg), but does not come to glaucoma disease to the eye. For the occurrence of chronic glaucoma, significant role play heredity, and in the mechanism of its occurrence, main place have vascular disorders. Therefore, it is considered that chronic glaucoma belongs to vascular diseases.
Chronic glaucoma truly is insidious disease. The eye has no pain, no redness, no pupil is enlarged. The person has no vision problems for a long time, but it appears damage of the visual field. The width of the field of view becomes narrow, and patients find difficult to orient in space. The patient cannot perceive all the details in the same way - it happens when it reads, to not see part/s of the letter. Many patients have weakened the dark adaptation, and take longer to find their way in an area that is less bright. Relatively early comes to the recognition of colors etc... If you measure the intraocular pressure, in most cases, it has increased and is above the upper limit of normal (22 Hg mm).
Preparedness for lifelong treatment
The treatment of chronic glaucoma, above all, is conservative. People with chronic glaucoma are given eye drops and medicines in the form of pills or injections. If conservative therapy does not yield results, patients go to laser therapy, and if it does not reduce the pressure below the upper limit of normal, the patient is sent to a surgery.
Besides medication and surgery, to regulate intraocular pressure or the consequences of glaucoma can be applied vitamin C, vitamins from B group, and others. Treatment for chronic glaucoma requires the patient and the physician's willingness to lifelong treatment, and patience to persist in treatment.
From glaucoma, get blind patients whose pressure is not adequately treated. A much smaller is the number of patients who are blind, but were treated properly under control of the ophthalmologist. Constantly are showing up new drugs, which successfully control intraocular pressure, and science is on a good way to isolate the gene responsible for the disease and through genetic engineering to "erase" chronic glaucoma from the registry of human suffering.
This is the way of conventional medicine about the treatment of chronic glaucoma. But there is one other way – the alternative one. More about this in the following articles.
