There were several crimes committed, such as criminal threats, hostage taking, false imprisonment, and burglary during the protest. Moreover, the protesters acted with negligence due to the fact of using fake but very realistic gun, which was a negligent infliction of emotional harm.
There were several torts committed in this case, such as causing emotional distress to Prudence, and assault. In both of these torts, Steve, the student that was threatening Prudence with the gun, should be liable. Notwithstanding the fact that the gun was not real, Prudence had all reasons to believe that her life is in danger and this fact, reasonably, caused an emotional distress. It is also possible to speak about the assault, as Steve threatened to murder Prudence if she would call the police, and he is solely liable for that. There was no battery committed in this case, as it requires physical impact on the victim. As for the false imprisonment, most likely the protesters will not be liable for the false imprisonment of the President of the University, as he was asleep and was not aware of the fact that he was confined by the protesters. To sum up the abovementioned, it can be stated with certainty that the protesters have committed several legal violations, such as criminal threats, hostage taking, false imprisonment, and burglary.
