My 5-6 year old female AmStaff mix has recently started bedwetting. Ugh. It's not every night, but sometimes when she gets all squished up and cuddly under the blankets with me and my boyfriend she seems to be leaking. Most the times it was just a little bit. But a few times it was really quite a bit. She never pees in the house during the day when we are gone. Ever. Only lately when she's really relaxed does this occur (this happened once just a little on her dog pillow in the living room). Any thoughts on how to handle this? I spoke with a vet and he said it's probably mild incontinence which is common and recommened medicine (can't remember the name off hand). I looked this up and it seems to come with many side effects. I'd rather not use drugs. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

Your girl should have a full physical exam that includes a full blood panel with thyroid testing, and an urinalysis. It's best to do these diagnostics to be sure there are no other underlying problems.
Has she been spayed? If not, hormone fluctuations can often contribute to 'dribbling'.
The vet most likely reccomended Proin, which is a safe and effective product for canine incontinence when properly used.- Re: Time for diagnostics... nctalley

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,294,251Thanks for the quick response. I am taking her to the vet for a work-up because of this on Saturday. She has been spade, many years ago. The vet did recommend Proin. I forgot to mention that my boyfriend was given a "sample" of this drug and discontinued it after only two days. I was out of town (which is good as I would not have approved of her taking this without a checkup first) but apparently she started drinking water excessively during those two days and peed on the kitchen floor right in front of him once, which as I mentioned she never ever does. Though other than that she has been acting normal. I wanted to take her to the vet today but I just moved and the only vet in my area can't see me until Saturday.
Thanks again. I'll certainly tell the vet your recommendation.

Seizures
Rapid heart rate
Elevation in blood pressure
Restlessness
Appetite reduction
Pale gums
Difficulty in urinating
Further, Proin will not work if it is not due to incontinence due to aging hormonal imbalances. From what you describe though, that is probably what is going on.
Colloidal silver should help with this condition, especially if it is caused by a urinary infection as it will kill the pathogens. Actually this is wonderful for your pet's overall health and will give her the vim and vigor she once had as a puppy.
Other herbs that will help:
CORNSILK Look for fresh (not dried) silk threads. These can be found in organic food stores, health food stores, or clipped directly from ears of corn, preferably organically grown. Cornsilk is safe for long term use. It may be combined with couchgrass and echinacea; this combination will help with inflammations or infections of the urinary tract. Another useful herb to try for treating incontinence is called UVA URSI. For a medium dog (~70 lbs) try about a teaspoon or so, or if you buy in capsules form, follow the label directions, using half the recommended dosage for humans. A lot of "natural" and herbal remedies are very individualized, and the amount needed by your dog may be different from the amount needed by my dog.
Another herbal mixture you can try is 2 parts horsetail, 1 part agrimony, and 1 part sweet sumach. This information is taken from a human herbal book, which recommends brewing this mixture as a tea and drinking 3 times a day. For dogs, we would either add to drinking water or mix into food. Unless of course they are willing to drink it.
You might want to go to a health food store and see what other herbs you can find for incontinence.
Lastly, I highly recommend feeding a natural, home prepared diet, consisting of fresh, raw, human-grade meats. Cut all grains from his diet.

I will still go to the vet to find out the underlying reason for this little problem, but I will explain that I plan to go the natural route. Abbey (my pooch) has been thriving on a mostly raw food diet for nearly a year now, mostly consisting of raw chicken thighs, raw eggs, carrots, celery, beets, beans, and some yogurt. I do change this up a couple times a week though and throw some other good meat and veggies in there too!
Once I find out the problem I'll post the results. Thanks again!
