Olive Oil Flush May Deceive Gallstone Sufferers

A newly published report says gallstone sufferers may have the false impression that they have expelled gallstones after undergoing an olive oil/ lemon juice flush, but they actually are passing soap stones” that emanate from the combination of oil and lemon when mixed with digestive enzymes.

(PRWEB) May 10, 2005 -- According to a newly published report, gallstone sufferers may have the false impression that they have expelled gallstones after undergoing an olive oil/ lemon juice flush. An April 16 report in the British journal Lancet, (Volume 365) says people may actually be passing soap stones” that emanate from the combination of oil and lemon when mixed with digestive enzymes.

Examination of stones expelled after an olive oil/lemon juice flush reveal they contain no cholesterol or calcium that are found in bona fide gallstones. Doctors obtained greenish soap stones” from a gallstone patient after an olive oil flush and compared them to the real gallstones surgically removed from the patient. Photographic and biochemical evidence clearly shows olive oil complexes with the potassium and acids in lemon juice to create what only appears to be a gall stone when they are expelled.

Other recent studies show olive oil may excite the production of bile, which may help with gall bladder symptoms, but evidence does not show olive oil/ lemon juice regimes actually cause gallstones to be expelled. The report is published in the British journal Lancet, Volume 365, April 16, 2005.
