wow I am impressed with what you are doing, John. Great work!!
The key to health I feel is a vegan, raw, whole food diet supplemented with the principles in the incurables program.
I do have some info and suggestions for you.
According to the man who started the juicing
movement, Dr Norman Walker, who invented the top of the line Norwalk juicer, there are some things one needs to be aware of during juicing. Dr Walker, sick twice in his younger days, cured himself with raw foods and juices and stuck his whole life with healthy principles he set forth in his books. Dr Walker who never revealed his age but called himself ageless, lived to be somewhere between 97 and 117 years of age.
In his book, "fresh vegetable and fruit juices", he says that one must drink the juices within 15-20 minutes. Do not hold it over in the refrigerator but make fresh each time.
If you do--on occasion--need to hold it over, fill a glass jar to the very tiptop and put a lid on it excluding as much air as possible. Be sure to chew the juice especially if taking no food with it. If the juice is not drank right away, the enzymes start dissipating.
Be sure to take no pulp with it or food for 30 minutes on an empty stomach as then the vital elements (atoms, molecules, nutrient, enzymes, phytochemicals, etc) go directly to healing and repair and are assimilated into one's system quickly (within a half hour or less). You can still consume the pulp unless juice fasting for salads, raw and cooked soups etc but save them till later. If one consumes the juice with the pulp or food, most of the vital elements do not go to healing and repair but to digestion.
He also points out something interesting. He says that all the herbicides, pesticide residues etc in the plant reside in the pulp (fibrous walls of the plant) and that the juices locked in the fiber until juiced repel the pesticides etc so the juices locked inside the cell that the juicer triturates as oil is to water as far as absorbing the pesticides are concerned..they are not in the juice if no pulp is is in it. Of course, this might be influenced by the type of juicer one has to some degree.
Thus when one smashes the fiber wall, it releases the non-tainted juice within. In other words, even if the plant is heavily sprayed, the juice contained within the tainted and pesticide laden fibrous walls is clean and is as organic as long as the pulp is not consumed with it.
This is of great help if one has limited dollars to spend for organic food as one's organic dollars can be spent for free range organic meats and dairy products if one is not vegan/vegetarian as these are more heavy laden with Antibiotics
and hormones etc than produce is or on organic produce one consumes whole not as juice and the rest of the produce for juicing
could if necessary be sprayed and non organic if money is tight or one cannot find a particular item they like in organic section.
Thus the juice for juicing
as long as one does not consume the pulp is made essentially organic even if sprayed and systemically contaminated with chemicals, thus one can use the organic dollars for things one does consume the pulp on or more heavily contaminated products like meat and cheese if not vegan.
re-raw food weight loss and green smoothies
As far as losing too much weight, Victoria Boutenko discusses this.Victoria herself lost over 100 pounds
when she became a 100% raw food faddist and as an educator of natural living/raw foods, she has encountered many vegans and raw foodists who lost so much weight their families' became alarmed and the person became so thin, they had to go back to eating cooked foods or animals often alternating between the two trying to keep healthy and yet not lose so much weight.
She found the answer to this problem, she states..when the people who were losing too much weight added green smoothies (and green juices) to their diet, they have often found they can stay on the raw diet and not get so skinny (as well as add to their health and lose weight if they need to do so).
Although I can only go from what she said, this is what she said.
Her website is raw family..maybe if you contact her she can tell you more. http://www.rawfamily.com/
To make green smoothies, she said it is important to alternate the kind of green you use every day or two as one could get sick if they consume the same green as a smoothie day after day due to plant chemicals in each green.
To make them, take whatever fruit you like/want (ie-apples. pears, berries, peaches, mangos, banana, melon etc)
Add this and good water (ice if you want) to a blender or vitamix with one or more of the following or other greens:
kale, collard greens, green tops of carrots, radish, beets, parsley root or daikon, watercress, parsley, spinach, romaine, celery, broccoli, bok choy, swiss chard, any Asian market green or wild greens like dandelion greens, strawberries or daisy leaves, lamb's quarter, plantain, burdock, cleavers, clover leaves etc.
re--raw foods (and more on green smoothies and health benefits)
For a list of what foods are considered raw, go here and read the 85% raw part
This diet (the hallelujah diet is 85% raw vegan whole food and if you go to the testimonies and type in various illnesses and read, you will be amazed at the many things even a 85% raw diet has done which will definitely encourage you. I feel raw foods is the key to health combining it with the incurables and green smoothies makes it perhaps the best things one can do for one's health.
Victoria did a study with a small town having them make no changes to their normal diet whatever it was at all. About 100 people just added one quart
of green smoothies a day that she made and transported to them daily. they kept a log of results which is in one of her books (I think it was the book I have it but can't find it I think it accidentally got packed and taken to my shed) but all participants related in the questionnaire that they had various improvements in health and weight lose when they were overweight. It is called green for life. http://www.rawfamily.com/products
Her and her husband after being 100% raw for 13 years started aging instead of getting younger and her intense search to not go back to eating cooked or animal foods lead her to study all the foods and many animals. She found that greens pound for pound if one eat enough (which is possible through the green smoothies) contain all the RDA for every nutrient except one and dark leafy greens are the most nutritious food on the planet.
She also found chimps share 99.7% of our exact DNA sequence and studied their diet (since they eat by instinct) and found they eat 45-50% greens and 45-50-% fruits (which includes many above the ground veggies like cukes, peppers, tomatoes etc). The last 4-7% is nuts, seeds, pith, stems and insects.
When she and her husband began drinking large amounts of green smoothies (they drank 2 gallons a day and were so satisfied they felt the need to eat nothing else) within a week all their lifetime warts and moles fell off indicating that they were so clean, viruses could not live in their bodies. Also her husband's beard turned form gray to black. she has a number of books on green smoothies.
re--Absorption rates of nutrients versus percentage of raw foods in diet.
In one book she puts forth her theory that the more raw food one eats, the more nutrition they absorb. I tried to find this book same as above) but couldn't but it was something along the lines of if one eats 5% raw they only absorb about .03% of the nutrients. If they go to 50% raw, then it is about .1% which is many times more nutrients (even though still quite small) so they feel a lot better. At 75% raw they absorb about 1% of their nutrients which is ten times more nutrients than they absorbed at 50% raw. At 99% it is 3 % and at 100% raw she estimates that one is absorbing about 30% of the nutrients in what they eat. I was pretty shocked reading this.
re--some of the best, most healing juice recipes
I think you would be smart since you are consuming so much juice to use often some of the top healing juices.
Schulze says the best veggie juice is 40% carrot, 40% beet and 20% leafy green such as kale.
He says the best fruit juice is 40% apple, 40% grape and 20% berry.
Dr Walker in his veggie and fruit juice book lists a number of illnesses and then the juice that heals that ailment. He definitely mentions some juices as helping nearly every disease and some juices much more than others.
Here are the ones he mentions the most (that help the most diseases).
For almost every disease he mentions #61 and #30 which are
formula # 61 = carrot and spinach
he lists this proportionally as 10 oz
of carrot and 6 oz
Formula #30 = carrot, beet, cucumber which is 10 oz
carrot, 3 oz beet, and 3 oz of cucumber
After this he mentions #1 and #2 a lot
#1 =carrot juice
#2 =potassium (carrot, celery, parsley and spinach) which is 7oz carrot, 4 oz celery, 2 oz parsley and 3 oz of spinach
Other ones he mentions a lot are #11 and #40
#11=horseradish (fresh) and lemon which is juice of one whole lemon to 1/4 pint (4oz) horseradish --ground but not pressed
#40 is carrot, Celery
, parsley which is 9 oz of carrot, 5 oz of Celery
and 2 oz of parsley juices.
He has 77 formulas in all and covers the best juices for 154 ailments. It is a good book. I originally read it decades ago and lost it and recently got more of his books including this one on eBay.
I would try to include these 8 juices often especially the ones schulze recommends and the #61, 30 and 1.
Also might want to see if your library carries any books by the juice lady, Cherie Calbom.
Just for some really delicious juices, I have found a lot of tasty ones here using a wide variety of produce. It is a great book.
Several of Boutenko's books have recipes for raw foods. Also check hacres.com.
Also Dr Gabriel Cousens book conscious eating is all raw foods and has a large recipe section. (this may be at the library or available through inter-library loan. If you get it be sure to read about the pottenger cat study which is amazing and shows the difference raw versus cooked foods make. For a similar study on rats go here and scroll down to the words
"Raw Food Vs The Cooked, American Diet - The Great American Rat Experiment"
These will let you know you are one the right path and motivate you to stay on this diet.
My favorite raw food book is dining in the raw by Rita Romano.
I see amazon has some used copies for 2.38 plus shipping (I think s and h is 3.99)which is a great price for this book.
Romano owned two health food restaurants and was such a good cook that she was the head cook at the world famous Hippocrates center known for her delicious foods.
The book is divided into 2 sections--raw and cooked and each section has multiple chapters from raw dressings to raw soups, salads, sprouted grains and legumes, marinated foods (these taste more like cooked foods but are still raw), dehydrated (be sure your dehydrator has a temperature setting as it needs to not go over a certain degree to be considered raw), sea-plants, deserts ( i love her "Waikiki pineapple pie) and she follows all these raw foods with a number of chapters on various cooked vegan foods such as soups, tempeh, tofu and so forth.
By going to the link where the book is one can look inside and see the chapter headings in the table of contents and on the back cover some of the topic she also covers in between the recipes.
I find many of the dishes to be very tasty. I generally write what I thought of it in my book by the recipe and maybe if it is really good, I write if it can be taken to potlucks, so later I know what things were good or bad or might be liked by others at potlucks.
The only problem with the book is the index could be better. I use the book quite a bit, so I am making my own index so if I have a surplus of some particular ingredient, can find all the recipes that contain that ingredient. so I am currently writing every ingredient and indexing what page it is on which is a huge job so if I have an excess of any particular fruit or veggies, I will now every recipe that uses it.
Also see if there is a raw food meetup group in your areas. I did this and they have monthly raw potlucks which people share recipes on some of their best raw dishes at. If you live in the US, just type meetups into google and your zip code.
This gathering of like minded people help one to share what they know and experience and learn from others often well educated people with an interest in health..we did have a sharing circle and that was great but she discontinued it to do a thing where we had to pay to attend, but the raw potlucks are still free at ours.
You might even try stating your own raw or health group if none available but you do have to pay a fee to use the site. One could do it a while and gain some people and then switch the regulars over to a website or email system to let them know of upcoming events if money is short. It is a learning, fun and support system really of great like minded people. Or see if a health food coop/store will let you post that you are starting a group for people wanting to increase the raw food in their diet.
Hope this is of help to you. If you need the link to the save your life manual or video downloads, let me know.
