Hi all. I think I'm finally starting to get better (barely), thanks to SSKI. Will post a full update soon. For the moment, I hope someone could clarify something to a novice.
Let's say a drop of a Lugol's 2% solution contains 2.55 mg of iodine. I understand this to mean 0.85 mg is elemental iodine (I2) and 1.70 mg is potassium iodide (KI), or ratios of 1:3 and 2:3 respectively.
In turn, a drop of trapper's regular SSKI contains 25 mg of KI. But what is the meaning of the next part of the sentence, "about 19 mg of iodine total." I thought there isn't elemental iodine in the product. When you calculate the total iodine, are you not supposed to simply add the I2 and KI amounts?
The iodine article states that back in the day, "the standard dose of potassium iodide given was 1 gram, which contains 770 mg of iodine." So I must be looking at this wrong or missing something.
I'd like to know how many drops I would need to reach 1g of KI from an SSKI solution labeled to contain 20 mg iodine per drop. It seems that it's not simply 50 drops.
Once on a lark I counted all the drops from one of Trapper's bottles of SSKI. 912 drops. SSKI = 1 g KI/ml solution, and he puts 30 ml in each bottle. So, each bottle has 30 grams KI, divided by 912 drops, which means each drop is almost 33 mg KI (potassium iodide). Using 32 mg and 75% for the easy math, then each drop of Trapper's SSKI has a minimum of 24 mg iodide. A mighty bang for the buck from a trusted source.
