There are three grades of DIATOMACEOUS EARTH, ONLY use FOOD GRADE for anything that is alive (even when used as a pesticide do not BREATHE IN the dust, a plastic spray bottle of water can keep down the dust in closed spaces).
Avoid letting the DE run into the lakes, rivers, ponds, etc., it will kill the fish (but is safe for humans and larger animals).
Diatomaceous earth is mainly used as fertilizer (ONLY FOOD GRADE), but is also an additive to animal feed (ONLY FOOD GRADE) and even used as an intestinal cleanser in humans and pets (some commercial cleansing products have it as an ingredient). It kills very small animals (roaches, bedbugs, slugs, etc.), but always use FOOD GRADE ONLY (it might not kill rodents because they are not small enough like insects).
