I'm on day 14 of my water fast, half way through my 28 day fast. My initial plan was 21 days but I decided to extend it to 28 after reading some benefits may not come around until after the 21st day.
I have 2 concerns -
I probably shouldn't be complaining but I have VERY minimal detox symptoms. I don't feel like a person going through an intense detox. The most I've experienced is a little light headedness which isn't frequent at all considering my really busy schedule - I work full time and I'm a full time graduate student. I'm concerned, is it possible there is something I'm doing wrong? The only thing I can think of is that I average 1 - 1.5 liters of water a day, which is a bit less than recommended but I am not dehydrated.
Secondly, I've been obsessing over how I will break my fast. My BMR prior to fasting was 1600, I expect it to drop to about 1400 with my weight loss. However I cannot find any resources whatsoever to provide me with an estimate of how much to subtract to account for the metabolic rate decrease from the fast. My current plan is to eat small portions of alkaline fruits for the first 3 days - watermelon, cantaloupe, papaya, grapefruit. Then incorporate steamed vegetables for 4 days. 1 meal of steamed vegetables post-fast day 4 & 5, and 2 steamed vegetable meals post-fast day 6 & 7. My problem is - then what?! what do I do for the remaining 6 weeks while my metabolism restores? Is it possible beginning at 800 calories a day and increasing it by 100 calories a week for 6 weeks might work? Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

This is a reply to # 2,042,076Oh a 21 day fast isn't entirely beneficial? I am starting one tomorrow to heal some bad tissue issues and drop 20 pounds. I wonder if 21 days is long enough? As for you not feeling the detox effects, is this your first water fast?

MoreThis is a reply to # 2,042,192A 21 day fast should be long enough for your goals. Its been 16 days and I've lost a lot more than 20 lbs, so you should be fine. The article I read was referring to having a clearer mind and improved brain function - that is what requires over 21 days.
I've intentionally fasted once for 5 days, that was 3 weeks before I began this fast. However, I often have bouts of Depression that lead me to "fast" unintentionally and I usually go 1 - 3 days without eating.

Great job thus far and great plan for re-feeding. I just want to add that break your fast with organic orange, sucking the juice out of it. After that plant based diet you are mentioning is fine, but eat as per hunger instead of counting calories. After two weeks you can introduce raw nuts and legumes.

This is a reply to # 2,042,076I am a habitual faster. And from my own experience, it's very difficult to say ahead when you have to finish your water fast. The most efficient fasting happens when you use up all your safe internal resources, and that depends on a lot of personal factors, such as amount of fat, muscle, and stored nutrients.
In my case, it always happens after 21 days of fasting. I know that it happens because I suddenly become hungry. And not hungry in my mind, dreaming about food and reading cooking books, but actually hungry in my body, and always for some specific food, like give-it-to-me-or-I-kill kind of a hunger. At that point, the only way I can extend my fasting is by adding highly diluted juices (I prefer carrot and then apple).
I think that you plan with your transitional period diet is very good. Just remember to listen to your body and spend a lot of time masticating your food. With good mastication, you might chose any reasonable food your body wants.
I have to confess that once I broke my 21 day water-only fast with a Big Mac. I spent hours masticating it though, and it was okay as the result. But I'll never recommend to try such an experiment. In my another much earlier fast, I was transitioning "by the book", but felt really bad - with severe diarrhea and vomiting - after eating meat on the second week of my transitional diet.
Be cautious and very slow on the way out. Listen to your own body.

This is a reply to # 2,042,286Hi I've just joined and I must say tat you have done a fantastic job fasting, the longest I hav fasted is 2 days then I broke my fast thinking I must eat otherwise il fall ill silly I knw but I wanted to ask how can you get rid of food cravings whilst fasting? I'm starting a 14 day Water Fast tomorrow! It won't be easy because il be cooking for Husband and 4 kids the smell of food gets very tempting any tips please because I'm only doing it to loose about 30lbs.- Re: Half way through a 28 day water ... archus

This is a reply to # 2,374,452I don't recommend fasting as means of losing weight. However if you do, you will benefit with detoxing junk from your body.
Drink warm water everytime your feel like eating. After first three days everything will be repulsive, coking will be easy.
BTW, you are responding to 4 year old post, that person may not be here on this forum. I have been on this forum for 14 years, I see people come go.
If you really want to lose weight, post fast feeding will be the key. Eat plant based foods and exercise. No processed foods, sugars, heavy meat proteins and you will do fine.

This is a reply to # 2,042,286I'm sure you're finished with your fast by now... but for future reference, any fast lasting longer than 3 days should be ended by a liquid diet for several days (to get your digestive track working properly again), & then soft foods (mashed potatoes, oatmeal, bananas, canned pears, etc) for several more days & then ease back into solid foods & harder to digest foods.
I made that mistake before & ouch! The belly ache!!! A mistake that I will not make again!

I don't remember any strong detox in my fasting. The most serious problems are weakness and boredom, or some sort of sensory deprivation caused by not enjoying food. Or, at some point, obsessional reading of cooking books - that's totally mental stuff but it actually compensates for the boredom problem. And that's it. So if you don't have any serious detox problems, it's okay, you are not alone.
