It is a rare type of inflammatory Arthritis that causes sudden inflammation in one or several joints, lasts a few hours or up to a few days, and then goes away completely. It is most likely that your friend has what is known as fybromialgia.

This name is just a name by Dr. etc. but it is caused by multiple Pinched and Dislocated Nerves throughout your friend's body. Those Nerves need to be reset asap.

It sounds like inflammation due to maybe weather changes or diet but the doctors may need to run test to check for Rheumatoid Arthritis or other conditions that cause sudden pain. My experience is suddenly feeling really hot with pain in my joints and it causes just a couple hives.
