I already posted a thread about Photodynamic Therapy where I wrote my story. I'll just short it for you guys.
My concerns started with fordyce spots. I got a lot of them 3 years ago - almost my whole lips were in them.
I've been treated with CO2 laser (twice and one part even for the 3rd time), tretinoin fluid (not gel or cream), even Aldara. Non of those helped. 4 months ago I've went under the photodynamic therapy. At first it made many of the fordyce spots gone but later a lot came back and it's still unresolved problem for me. Fordyce spots started to come out after I stopped taking anti-depressants 3,5 years ago. I still had huge depression, my girlfriend and I broke up and once - being very nervous at work - I bit my top lip so hard - (because of the exfoliative cheilitis) - that these spots came out.
I had exfoliative cheilitis my whole life but it never was a concern to me until I got fordyce spots. Each time you hurt the lips - a spot comes out - or dozen of them, so I can't even exfoliate the dead skin anymore. I had to wait for it to drop off on it's own.
To manage this condition I took the advice of #92305 and started applying Donovex (Daivonex in my case - it's the same, just different name) and I thought it does make a difference. Unfortunately the change wasn't so significant so I started using Batrafen but it only made my lips inflamed as ever and I think batrafen makes it worse for me.
Right now I'm about to go to the hospital, because beside of my lip condition I have stomach inflamation, prostate inflamation (which started before fordyce spots) and hiatus hernia - which started 6 years ago when I got very depressed.
I think, and not only me, but my psychologist and my main doctor, that my body condition is an effect of my Depression and while I'll be at the hospital, I'll have an appointment with a psychiatrist and I'll go back after 3,5 years to anti-depressants. I think that my fordyce spots came out because I quit the antidepressants on my own. I was stupid, my ex-girlfriend told me not to take them and I took her stupid advice. I don't know if anti-depressants will make the inflamations go away but due to my terrible condition - I mean my depression, which got a lot worse after having fordyce spots. I think this is the only way to cure my body. Depression can cause a lot more damage to the body than you think.
Things I'm doing right now:
- applying Daivonex on my lips
- not eating sugar, not eating fried food
- eating only natural stuff, prepared by myself - non ready to go food
- eating a lot of fish
- eating only chicken - mostly boiled chicken right now
- I'm not eating or drinking any dairy
- I'm noy eating any bread and also I quit eating ANY gluten
I should go on the hospitalization in about two weeks. I'll be taking many tests - my stomach and a lot of other stuff.
I'll let you know if anything comes out of the tests. I just wish there was any answer to my condition, so I'm doing all I can, even risking my job, cause I've been on sick leave a lot these days. But what's a life when you have to do a shitty office job and not doing what you love because of your Depression - in my case it's art. I gotta do everything I can guys. I'm also waiting for the sun because the past few years I've been avoiding it so much I think my body needs it like nothing else. I gotta do it...- Re: Hospitalization - depression may... longterm

This is a reply to # 2,155,866You mentioned that you have stomach inflammation. I was just checking out tongue chart chinese medicine (googled tongue chart chinese medicine images) since I have a crack in the center of my tongue, which is known as the stomach/spleen crack. As for the stomach, it means your stomach dry. I assume that means your stomach is not producing enough acid?
Here is just one article that links inflammation to depression. Aspirin is one of the suggested anti-inflammatory therapies, which is suggested for adults over 40 anyway.

This is a reply to # 2,155,906No, my problem is that I have too much acid because of reflux disease and it's caused by Hiatus hernia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiatus_hernia). My doctors say that one way of treating stomach inflamation is reducing the production of acid. Lack of acid doesn't make your mouth dry.
As for your simple way recommendations:
- true, I should drink more water
- I avoid bad fats - I only eat boiled/baked chicken
- I eat A LOT of fish every week, even raw fish, like herring
- I should eat more dark, leafy vegetables, although I eat a lot of raw red beets every week
- I should exercise
- I'm trying to do that
- I should sleep better
Thanks for your response. Tomorrow I'm going to sign for hospitalization. I was too late today. As most depressed people, I feel better at night. Now's dark so I feel better, I got more energy. My psychologist tells me that it's a big sign of Depression and that I should consider taking anti-depressants. Depression, as I wrote, does not only affect your mood. It can damage your body to a level of no chance for restoration. But I gotta try. I got really, nothing to lose.- Re: Hospitalization - depression may... longterm

This is a reply to # 2,155,937One often gets acid reflux from having too little stomach acid. Most people think the opposite. I also have acid reflux. But, I am not suggesting it has anything to do with EC...just trying to read my tongue.
I never thought about whether I felt better at night. I guess I do not feel as groggy at night as I do in the morning. There are lots of foods and vitamins that help with Depression besides medication. Vitamin D from sunlight is supposed to really help. I do not know if vitamin D supplements are as effective, but maybe. That means you had a fungal infection, but are you still trying to figure out what caused your fungal overgrowth? This is a reply to # 2,156,148It is possible that a diet high in sugar caused yeast overgrowth. It is also possible that yeast overgrowth caused my celiac disease. I think an infection- whether bacterial or fungal- makes the lips peel. And, these organisms enter cracked or raw skin. It is the condition that causes this cracked or raw skin, which should be the focus. In my case, celiac disease seemed to cause chapped lips as other food intolerances. A strict diet was challenging at first, but it has become a way of life.

This is a reply to # 2,156,177I also stopped eating sugar, bread or any yeast. To me not eating bread was challenging but I've managed to hold on to this for 3rd week now or even 4th. I was today at the hospital and they told me to get a test referral(I think that's the appropriate word in English) from my doctor... Guess it's gonna take week or maybe two... But that's just the stupid procedures you got to cope with. I've been already tested for fungal infection and the result was negative. A nurse took a swab from my mouth and there was no candida.
As for the no bread diet... because of my stomach inflammation I got too much gasses after eating it so I stopped and I got better. That's why I'm continuing it.
Anyway it all started with Depression for me few years ago. Depression could've led to my hiatus hernia and prostate inflammation. I shouldn't have stopped taking anti-depressants without doctor's knowledge but I was stupid back then. Somehow I think that's my case and I can't wait to try the pills again. I'm also waiting for the sunny days... It's winter and in last few days the sky was awfully gray. I can't wait for the Spring...

Medical textbooks suggest antidepressants as possible treatment for EC. But like you say, it may have more to do with antidepressants lowering inflammation in the body. This is a reply to # 2,156,292No, no, no... I only think it might help... I haven't started taking pills again - yet. I will be examed in the hospital and I will also have a meeting with a psychiatrist there and such meetings always end up with prescribing antidepressants. What I'm trying to say is that when I stopped taking antidepressants 3 years ago, my lips got screwed up. And what's important - I stopped taking pills without any knowledge of my previous psychiatrist who I was visiting back then. I know I have to take the pills again, after 3 years, cause my condition is really bad. Every time when I have a session with my psychologist, I tell her that I think about suicide. She first told me that I should go to the doctor and consider taking antidepressants but I didn't want to take any medications then. After meeting with my doctor who offered me a hospitalization, telling me that my health problems might be caused by depression, I started to believe that the whole thing I'm in may really be caused by being depressed for so many years - years before even I started seeing a psychiatrist or having EC or fordyce spots. And now with Depression getting stronger, it's getting worse with stomach, prostate and lips.
I read you guys here sometimes and I see that most of you can manage 2-3 days without skin buildup. I can't manage few hours after exfoliating. Any stronger irritation to the lips causes spot rising in the place where I got irritated - like touching them with a tip of fork by accident etc.
I must try anything that is possible, anything that is available to handle these problems. I am strongly starting to believe that antidepressants can be an answer.- Re: Hospitalization - depression may... ScottE54

This is a reply to # 2,156,398I think you should try going back on the antidepressants. I don't find them to be all that effective for me personally, but everyone reacts differently to medication.
Someone mentioned a while back that antidepressants are more or less just a false perception and I have to agree. I have an appointment with a psychiatrist next week and I'm going to try to score some Xanax. I think it will help with the anxiety/social phobia EC inevitably causes.
I notice when I drink a lot of alcohol I forget all about my lips and just enjoy life, but obviously I can't recommend doing that since it's dangerous and we all have responsibilities as adults.

This is a reply to # 2,156,442Stay strong, scarecrow, and don't let this condition get the best of you. I have to say, though, I haven't heard of your particular symptoms in my 6 years reading this and other forums. I am starting to think understanding why the Fordyce spots are appearing in connection with the trauma may be key to understanding the chonicity of our conditions though, even though some of us, like me, don't have them at all, and at first to me it appeared to be entirely coincidental.
Keep us posted on the anti-depressants, there was that one study that showed remission but never a follow-up. It's also really helpful to know what happens when people are "cured" but then stop their treatment. I hope you find your cure soon, my friend.

This is a reply to # 2,155,866I broke up with a girl and suffered with severe anxiety and Depression for a week. Guess what slowly cropped up on my upper lip, you got it Fordyce. Its bee 4-5 months now, no changes. Covers the top lip where it touches my bottom lip and my lips are always dry now. Never on any meds or anxiety medication but I've definetly have a form of anxiety now from them. No one has ever said anything to me about them, not even my girlfriend, I don't mention them to her. I really do feel like anxiety and Depression can reak serious havoc on your body and immune system. Sadly I've developed a slight case of generalized anxiety over them and it sucks. I also have them on the inside of my checks and at times it feels as though they're pushing on my teeth and I hate the sensation. It makes it worse to think that once healthy pretty lips with no problems are now a problem at 40. You try to be thankful but in the end it sucks. I can live with the spots but the dry lip thing is insidious lol, if my lips could retain moisture now I would probably move on but it's constant reminded something is wrong. Kinda of hard to shake when you can't smile or lips get severly dry when you're talking. It's not like a dry spot on my leg that I can forget about all day.
