I'm sorry you are so upset about your mother's hep. C. I had it for 20 years before I was disagnosed and I had no symptoms at all, until a few years later, when I got fatigued.
It is a very slow progressing disease, unless she is drinking alcohol. There are many wonderful books on the subject and also lots of information online. A patient needs to educate themselves. Its very important to know what foods are good for you and which ones to avoid. Go to the library, bookstore or health food store. She should be taking milk thistle everyday to protect her liver.
There is a much better cure that will be available in the next 2 years that is in clinical trials now. It is called VX950 by the Vertex Pharmaceutical Corp. It is getting wonderful results with no side effects and it works fast (often in a few weeks). I'm in the clinical trial myself. Maybe your mother can get in the third phase of the trial starting in the fall.
You and her can check out http://www.hepchandbook.com
That has many helpful things to help her. She needs to find out what genotype she has. The most common one and the hardest to treat is genotype 1 (a or b). Current treatment is not very effective for that type and has bad side effects. You can check out Dr. Zhang's website (I have been on his herbs for 2 1/2 years) at http://www.sinomedresearch.com.
You can go to the patients support forum to read what we have been discussing there. Another good website is http://www.docmisha.com
Does your mother have medical insurance? You don't need medical insurance to get in the clinical trial.
You can also check out: http://www.liversupport.com
and get on their email mailing list to be information of the latest information on HCV (hep. C). They also have many great articles of interest on there.
Best wishes to you and your mother. There's great hope ahead. HCV will be a disease of the past in just a couple more years. She should be around for many more years. Please educate yourself so you don't need to worry so much. Take an active approach. Help her improve her diet, etc.
